In January 2006 Don Nelson was hired as the part-time Youth and Young Adult Director. Don is no stranger to the congregation. He has been a member of Forest Hills Mennonite Church since 1993. He has served here as a youth leader for more than ten years, and his clear calling to youth ministry has been evident to the congregation. For many years Don was owner and manager of Nelwood, a woodworking business. Recently he sold that business and began working as a kitchen installer for Quality Custom Cabinetry. He is married and the father of three young adult children.

A Mentoring Program, pairing children one-on-one with a caring adult, is offered for elementary through high school aged children. In addition to the interactions initiated by the Mentor with his or her child, there are also several fun activities planned for the whole group of mentoring participants throughout the year. The goals of the Mentoring Program are: - to promote mutually enjoyable friendships between children and adults.
- to provide adults, in addition to parents, to be role models for our children.
- to build self-esteem and encourage exploration of gifts.
- to share experiences of new learning and growth.
Contact Cheryl Hollinger if you have interest in the mentoring program. |

Service Projects/ Youth Convention |
Every other year there is a national Mennonite youth convention held somewhere in the United States. Unless the distance makes the cost prohibitive, the youth group usually attends these conferences. They hold various fundraisers throughout the year to help pay expenses. In 2005 the youth attended the conference held in Charlotte, NC. The theme was Can't Keep Quiet. On years when there is no national convention, they spend a week of the summer in a service experience with agencies such as Habitat for Humanity or Mennonite Disaster Service. The summer service week in 2006 was spent at Glenbrook Day Camp close to Toronto, Canada. The youth helped with maintenance work around the camp and also helped with the kids attending the camp. This is the second trip the MYF has made to this Canadian camp. For many years the MYF has also been sponsoring a child through Compassion International. |
